Dear William

Message from Chairman

The People Centered Internet is strongly aligned with the Internet Society in its efforts to spread access to and the associated benefits of Internet. PCI recognizes that access is only the first step in a path towards local utlity of the Internet. Ironically, this global system produces real benefits when users discover locally useful information in local languages in addition to the global content of the World Wide Web. PCI endorses the recent press release<https://peoplecentered.us15.list-manage.com/track/click?u=8ce8952ae14edfa265edcadab&id=f6e93fdd36&e=9fe464689a> issued by the Internet Society from Buenos Aires.

Vint Cerf
Chairman

Call To Action

Crisis Response in a Networked Age - Mei Lin Fung and John Philpin

There is a great need to be able to verify individual identity while simultaneously safeguarding personal information. Recent events that highlight this problem include the Equifax data breach; the recent series of hurricanes in the Atlantic; and, closer to home, the wildfires in California. To make matters worse, Californian’s are at the top of the list in the US as most likely to experience Identify Theft according to a recent Wallethub report<https://peoplecentered.us15.list-manage.com/track/click?u=8ce8952ae14edfa265edcadab&id=08d0367f21&e=9fe464689a>. Crisis have the potential to leave people without valid ID and with no access to their medications & medication lists for extended periods of time. We are Individuals, Communities and Organizations that are networking together using technology as an enabler.

At this frontier where tech and people meet, we can use your help. We are already working with the Red Cross in California and beginning to look at Puerto Rico. Please provide your information by following the link below and completing the on-line form<https://peoplecentered.us15.list-manage.com/track/click?u=8ce8952ae14edfa265edcadab&id=57ca46a570&e=9fe464689a> and we will take it from there.

Current Principles of the People Centered Internet

David Bray has now joined us as PCI's new Executive Director and has embarked on a "listening and learning" toward from PCI members and stakeholders. With his arrival, we would like to take a look back at our founding principles, and invite you to review and let us know your suggestions and comments on areas that need our attention.

If you have feedback, please email us at feedback at peoplecentered.net<mailto:feedback at peoplecentered.net>

Building Trust in the Internet Amongst Those Not Connected Yet

By Maria Palombini

As of 2017 there are 3.58 billion users of the Internet worldwide<https://peoplecentered.us15.list-manage.com/track/click?u=8ce8952ae14edfa265edcadab&id=dfa4743ce1&e=9fe464689a> representing approximately 50% of the world’s population. Essentially this means approximately 50% of the world’s population does not have access to the Internet. The reality is that those who do not have access are the ones who could benefit the most from being connected in a global community – the impoverished, the uneducated, the undocumented, the disadvantaged. Their exclusion is not by choice but by circumstance.

An Internet of the People, by the People, for the People – a UK Perspective

The UK is an important hotbed of new digital startup businesses and has rapid adoption of new online and mobile technologies by its residents.

On Friday 29th September in London, UK, DigitasLBI hosted an afternoon of debate concerning 'how to make the internet great again' at a pivotal point of online information explosion, social and life-style changes and artificial-intelligence technology innovations, which prompt a number of ethical and inclusion themes that need to be addressed.

The following article, by Deb Gale and Andrew Ford, reviews the excellent event and addresses these global themes with a UK perspective.

State of Broadband 2017 Report Issues 5 Key Recommendations to Spur Development

We need to know the context in which we operate - the UN body ITU has issued its latest report on connectivity and the Sustainable Development Goals we have a reached a pivotal point - what are your views on the areas meriting our attention that others are not addressing?

The Future of the Internet - 2017 Internet Society Global Internet Report

We're pleased to feature this month a report on the future of the Internet from the Internet Society:

"No one can predict the Internet’s future, but it is too important to ignore. Most believe the Internet will continue to shape our societies, cultures and economies, and define the world for generations to come. But there are no assurances of what lies ahead for the Internet. The choices we make today will impact the Internet we are creating for tomorrow.

From its earliest beginnings, the Internet evolved from a set of fundamental principles based on openness, inclusivity, collaboration, and transparency. While its original premise was the voluntary exchange of data across a network of networks, its social, technological, economic and political impact has been profound.

The future Internet promises social development, economic prosperity and new technologies that can amplify the best of humanity. But it also brings about daunting challenges and questions.

The Internet Society launched an initiative in 2016 to identify the uncertainties and factors that will shape the future of the Internet. Distinct from other Internet industry research initiatives, this has been a community-based endeavor to draw from the expertise and diverse experiences of stakeholders across our global community. Through a series of interviews, surveys and consultations with key stakeholders over an 18-month period, a picture of the future has emerged. This picture suggests that while technology will permeate virtually all aspects of society in ways we have yet to fully imagine, the foundational values of the Internet will remain as important in 5-7 years as they did 25 years ago.

Our goal for this report was to explore the hopes and fears for the future of the Internet guided by a central question: How do we ensure the continued development of an Internet at the service of all people?"
