                     What
allocations are available We welcome applications for current and future
research projects requiring access under the Research, Postgraduate, and
Proposal Development allocation classes. Your project is granted
allocations of CPU core hours on our HPC platforms through these classes:

   - *Research* allocations represent significant amounts of CPU core
hours, provided based on the needs of the research project. Also included
is access to technical expertise to help optimise and parallelise code in
the science software application used on the platform. These allocations
are only available for projects that contribute to the objectives of a
current peer-reviewed research grant held by the researcher.
   - *Postgraduate* allocations are geared towards postgraduate students,
who will receive the same access as those under the Research class, without
   needing a peer-reviewed grant.
   - *Proposal Development* allocations are used to evaluate your science
software application on NeSI’s platforms, gather preliminary results to
apply for a Research allocation, and assess which HPC platform best suits
   your research problem.

How to apply The application process has 3 easy steps:

   1. Login using your institutional credentials or your NeSI account at
   nesi.org.nz/apply
   <http://nesi.us6.list-manage.com/track/click?u=16e6cb3b8a0ab7d5e3c552153&id=dd2d0f3679&e=d3f3e4e3d1>
   .
   2. Select the correct allocation class on the right. If you are just
starting out, select “Proposal development”. Otherwise, select "Research"
   or "Postgraduate".
   3. Complete and submit the online form. Don't worry if you cannot answer
all of the questions, we will follow up with you later.

If you need any assistance with the forms, email us at support at nesi.org.nz
<javascript:_e(%7B%7D,'cvml','support at nesi.org.nz');> or attend our
face-to-face session on *Friday, 13 March*. Details for that session are
below.

Proposal Development allocations are always provided free of charge on all
of our platforms to help you evaluate and test the software you want to
use. We strongly recommend using these allocations to benchmark your
software on all of NeSI’s platforms. Understanding where your software runs
fastest can greatly speed up your whole research programme. How
much does it cost? NeSI will be making significant changes to its access
policy. A final draft of the new policy with the proposed changes is
available here
<http://nesi.us6.list-manage.com/track/click?u=16e6cb3b8a0ab7d5e3c552153&id=770a2946bf&e=d3f3e4e3d1>
for review. A key change to the policy will be the removal of cost
recovery. Applications received from 1st March 2015 can benefit now from
this change which means that NeSI's platforms are now *free of charge* to
researchers applying for Research and Postgraduate allocations.

This removal of cost to access NeSI HPC eliminates the major barrier
reported by researchers in limiting their ability to use NeSI's platforms,
and opens access to our platforms for current and emerging researchers
working on New Zealand's research priorities. Note that Proposal
Development allocations are always provided free of charge. Talk
to us face-to-face NeSI staff are hosting a video conference to answer your
questions from *10-11am on Friday 13 March*. We can tell you more about
eligibility or the suitability of NeSI HPC for your research, so add the
date to your schedule and join us!
